GERC's GAD mainstreaming in co-ops journey--all told in a book, in partnership with We Effect

GERC Inc. announces the release of the Publication 2008-2022 The GERC Inc.’s Gender and Development (GAD) Journey in Philippine Cooperatives: The GERC Inc.-We Effect Partnership on GAD Mainstreaming in Philippine Cooperatives with fund support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).”

The 106-page book documents the 2008-2022 partnership of GERC Inc. and the Swedish organization We Effect (WE) on mainstreaming GAD in Philippine cooperatives. As the Publication brings to the readers the milestones of the GAD journey of GERC Inc., together with its partnership on gender with the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) and cooperatives nationwide, the book reiterates the important role of gender-fair Philippine cooperatives in enabling women and men to have equal rights, opportunities for advancement, services, and access to and control over resources and benefits as well as equal roles to play in development as both participants and leaders. The Publication also emphasizes the message that being a gender-fair co-op has socioeconomic returns that benefit the membership.

The development of the Publication is one of the outputs of the GERC Inc. Project “Institutionalizing Women Empowerment and Gender Equality in Philippine Cooperatives,” implemented in partnership with the WE Philippines Program “Equality First: Working Together Towards Gender Equality, Transformative Housing, and Empowerment of the Ruralfolk (Working TOGETHER).”

In her message in the Publication, WE Country Director Ms. Jessica Umanos-Soto expressed the hope that the book would be able to contribute
to emancipating women and men from persistent inequality and injustices—as it carries narratives that must be told now and for future generations. GERC Inc. Chairperson Dr. Emma A. Nieva, meanwhile, said in her message in the Publication that GERC Inc. is sharing its story of GAD mainstreaming journey to help refresh and reenergize everyone who is working to expand, achieve, and sustain GAD efforts in co-ops and transform even more the lives of co-ops and cooperators. This GAD mainstreaming story is a long one to tell with many inspiring lessons—with surely even more exciting developments to come, Dr. Nieva stated.

UN statement on 2022 "International Youth Day"

From the United Nations (UN) statement for 2022 IYD (August 12):

The objective of this year’s "International Youth Day (IYD)" theme "Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for All Ages," is to amplify the message that action is needed across all generations to achieve the "Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)" and leave no one behind. The 2022 IYD will also raise awareness on certain barriers to intergenerational solidarity, notably ageism,
which impacts young and old persons, while having detrimental effects on society as a whole.

On July 2, cooperatives all around the world will celebrate the 100th International Day of Cooperatives (#CoopsDay). A decade on from the UN International Year of Cooperatives, which showcased the unique contribution of cooperatives to making the world a better place, this year’s #CoopsDay slogan --“Cooperatives Build a Better World”-- echoes the theme of the International Year.

“Cooperatives are answering the wake-up call of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who warned that the world is ‘on the edge of an abyss — and moving in the wrong direction’, and exclaimed that ‘to restore trust, and inspire hope, we need cooperation, we need dialogue, we need understanding’. For nearly two centuries, cooperatives have been pulling in this direction. This was amply highlighted at the 33rd World Cooperative Congress, held by the International Cooperative Alliance in December 2021, which focused a spotlight on how their shared identity is moving cooperatives to take action to address the world’s problems” declared Bruno Roelants, Director General of the ICA.

The ICA invites cooperators everywhere to spread the word about how our human-centred business model, inspired by the cooperative values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity, and solidarity and the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others, is building a better world.
Operating all around the world, in many different sectors of economy, cooperatives have proven themselves more resilient to crises than the average. They foster economic participation, fight against environmental degradation and climate change, generate good jobs, contribute to food security, keep financial capital within local communities, build ethical value chains, and, by improving people’s material conditions and security, contribute to positive peace.“Cooperatives are the only enterprise model with globally agreed principles that rest on a foundation of shared ethical values” added Bruno Roelants.

The ICA calls on cooperators and partners around the world to get ready to celebrate #CoopsDay on 2 July and to show the world how Cooperatives Build a Better World.

About the International Day of Cooperatives
Marked by cooperatives worldwide since 1923 and officially proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on the centenary of the ICA in 1995, the International Day of Cooperatives is celebrated annually on the first Saturday of July.
The aim of #CoopsDay is to increase awareness of cooperatives and promote the movement's ideas of international solidarity, economic efficiency, equality, and world peace. Since 1995, the ICA and the United Nations through Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives (COPAC) have jointly set the theme for the celebration of #CoopsDay.

Through #CoopsDay, local, national and global policymakers, civil-society organisations and the public in general can learn about the contribution of cooperatives to a secure future for all.
